The DLL training program:

– theoretical part: main assumptions of the direct method, lesson structure, speed, techniques for helping students answer, revision versus new material, correcting mistakes, the most common mistakes made by beginner teachers,

– practical part (participants conduct a short lesson),

– what a good teacher should know: beginner groups, new student in the group, grammar lessons and exams, course cards, student as a customer, Internet platform, other courses conducted using the direct method (various languages, Kids English, Direct Business),

– practical part,

– end of training: conclusions and discussion.

Our “How to teach with the direct method from Direct Language Lab coursebooks?” course is specially designed to help language teachers understand and implement the direct method in their teaching approach. The direct method is a popular teaching method that emphasizes speaking and listening skills in language acquisition. Our course provides practical guidance on how to teach with Direct Language Lab coursebooks using the direct method.

Our training course offers insights on how to utilize the full potential of the direct method to teach languages quickly and effectively. With our training, language teachers will learn how to make their students speak a foreign language from the very first lesson. We understand the importance of creating an engaging and interactive learning environment that encourages students to speak and practice their language skills.

Our training course also emphasizes the importance of achieving high levels of student satisfaction with their learning results. We believe that satisfied students are more likely to become loyal customers of a language school and recommend it to others. As such, our training course offers valuable insights on how to achieve high levels of student satisfaction through effective teaching techniques and approaches.

.

The new edition was planned to be made available from the new school year. However, our conversations with colaborating language school owners have shown that many people consider this date too early due to the condition of language schools after several months of the pandemic. There is also still a gret deal of uncertainty as to what the next few months will look like, both in terms of the pandemic itself and the general situation in the language teaching market.
.

That is why we have decided to delay the publication of the new edition until the second semester of the 2021/2022 school year. On our part, we will spend the extra time well to provide you with a well-prepared set of textbooks, additional materials (visuals, placement tests and exams), as well as an online course and an interactive coursebook in the mobile app.
.

In order to enable each school to take an autonomous decision concerning the most convenient time to switch to the new edition, the current edition will remain on sale at least until the end of 2022.

We invite the owners, teachers and employees of language schools cooperating with Wydawnictwo DEEP (Direct Language Lab) to free webinars, during which we will talk about our books, websites, programs and apps.

We will also be happy to answer your questions!

Both in face-to-face and online language classes, it will be useful for the teacher and the student to have access to the Direct Language Lab book on a computer or mobile phone.

>>>>> Here are detailed instructions:

1. When the administrator turns on the “Teacher’s Book Library” add-on in the “Licences” tab in “My School”, teachers will be able to open Direct Language Lab books in DL PRO.
The administrator should define the maximum number of books that teachers will be using simultaneously:
– the program only counts the number of books being used at a given moment, regardless of their titles or levels,
– when one teacher closes a book, it becomes immediately available to another teacher.
For example, if the administrator has turned on access to 10 books, teachers can open a maximum of 10 books at the same time. Opening the eleventh book will not be possible. The next teacher will be able to open a book only after one of these 10 teachers has closed their book.

2. To start using the book, the student should log into DL PRO, go to the “My profile” tab in the top right-hand corner of the screen and enter their login and password from the https://dlhub.eu platform. The books they activated on the https://dlhub.eu platform with the coupon from the coursebook will now be available in the DL PRO program.

3. After logging into DL PRO, the teacher or student can open the book in the “Books” tab or in the virtual classroom by clicking the “Open the book” button. In order to see the content of the book, select a unit and a word group. You can then navigate by pressing the “Next Group” or “Previous Group” buttons.

4. Please note that the layout of the book on the screen does not represent a page from the printed book because the material from a group of words is conveniently displayed in the application window, along with explanations as well as questions and answers. The book does not contain grammar or communication lessons.

5. The “Books” tab can be seen by the student and teacher, but cannot be seen by the administrator or employee.

>>>>> Selected advantages of the DL PRO program:

TEACHER’S BOOKS

Our coursebooks for learning languages are available not only in the student’s version, but also as teacher’s books.

Teacher’s books have a plastic cover and special binding and are printed on thicker paper, which makes them more durable and convenient to use during the lesson.

Some of the coursebooks are also accompanied by sets of illustrations that are very useful when teaching beginners or children.

More information can be found in the description of each book in our website https://www.dllab.eu/books

We know that cooperating language schools continue teaching online classes. That’s why we would like to make your work easier by extending the special offer on our electronic products until 31 May 2020.

BOOKS

During foreign language classes conducted with the use of videoconferencing, teachers and student can of course continue using printed books, just as during classes in real life.

One of the advantages of printed books are grammar lessons with exercises to be completed in writing. What is more, according to many people, a ‘real’ book is conducive to better learning results.

APP AND PLATFORM

During an online class, a modern and very convenient solution is to use our interactive coursebook mobile app as well as our online platform.

The student can then be sent a code by email or in a text message, which means that they can start studying immediately.

The interactive coursebook in the DLL Ebook mobile app contains all the words, grammar explanations as well as questions and answers (all the material from the paper book except for grammar lessons) so it can be successfully used during the lesson by both the teacher and the student(s).

The internet platform https://dlhub.eu contains online courses that complement classes in a very effective way.

SPECIAL PRICES – MOBILE APPLICATION AND INTERNET PLATFORM

We have extended the special prices on our electronic products until 31 May 2020.

The price includes:

(1) the interactive coursebook in DLL Ebook mobile application (see how it works https://youtu.be/xLVfOVUbMeA)

(2) online courses on the https://dlhub.eu Internet platform (see how it works https://youtu.be/3oEfmJqzoO0)

(3) downloadable MP3 files with the recording of the book.

Important: If you represent a language school or if you are a teacher and want to purchase more than 1 code, you can email us at orders@dllab.eu to be able to purchase the codes for a special price of 4.49 EUR (offer valid until 31 May 2020).

DIRECT METHOD ONLINE

As we conduct our direct method classes in a conversational way, without the emphasis on writing, the videoconferencing formula allows us to teach our classes practically in the same way and with the same efficiency as during the lessons during which we meet in person.

And if we want to do a written exercise, our student(s) can send us text messages in the same program with their solutions.

More tips in our website https://www.dllab.eu/news-en as well as on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/DirectLanguageLab

Online lessons, i.e. video conferences with a teacher, are the best option in the current situation. At least we can make good use of the time spent at home 🙂

Our experience shows that while small difficulties may sometimes occur during the first connection, after solving them the course continues smoothly and effectively! Here is a small guide from experienced online teachers!

1. LEAVE AND ENTER AGAIN

A lot of problems can be solved by refreshing the website, leaving the video conference, closing the browser or the application and entering again.

You can also restart your computer, but it’s going to take a little more time (and will disconnect you from the conference call).

These methods might not be very sophisticated, but they are always recommended by IT technicians 🙂

2. TURN OFF THE VIDEO

If you experience interferences, delays, image freezing etc., you can try turning off the video and continuing the lesson without it.

Video transmission is very demanding for your device and Internet connection (remember that video is basically dozens of images per second that have to be sent between all conference call participants), so turning it off often helps.

If we have a few students and the problems affect only one of them, then of course it is enough if only that person turns off the video.

3. OTHER WEBSITES?

Make sure that other apps or websites do not use the Internet connection unnecessarily during your online lesson (e.g. by downloading large files).

Such an overloaded connection may not have enough bandwidth for your video conference, so you should make sure that you only use the program/application or website that you need for your lesson.

4. THE CAMERA OR MICROPHONE DOES NOT WORK

a. Start by checking the simplest solutions, i.e. perhaps the speakers or microphone are muted completely or disconnected?

b. Sometimes more than one microphone is available in the device settings (even if you are sure you only have one).
In this case, change the settings of the program/application, browser or operating system.

c. Sometimes the browser blocks the use of the microphone or camera by a website, then you need to find the camera/microphone in your browser settings and grant permission to use them. (In Firefox, you should also check the Privacy and Security settings.)

d. Find and check the camera in Windows settings because its use may be blocked there.

5. UNWANTED SOUNDS

a. If you have several students taking part in the lesson and you can hear unwanted sounds, you can ask students to mute their microphones one by one. If you stop hearing the sounds, you will know whose device is causing them.

b. Sometimes problems are caused by the fact that the laptop’s microphone catches the sound of its own speakers (which should not be happening), in order to avoid this, the user can:
– start using headphones,
– or turn down the speakers a little.

6. WALKIE-TALKIE (MUTING)

A good idea for a lesson with a few students is to ask everyone to mute their microphones and turn them on only when they are to speak.

Muting or turning on the microphone requires just one click, so it should not be very bothersome.

TIP: In some programs, when the microphone is muted, you can press and hold the SPACE key while speaking (the microphone will switch on), and then let go when you finish talking (the microphone will be muted again).

Muting the microphone, however, has a small downside: it can cause small delays in voice transmission, but it will certainly make the lesson much quieter.

In connection with the current situation of epidemic danger, we would like to remind you that the direct method in the form used in the Direct Language Lab coursebooks www.dllab.eu works very well in online classes. These can be conducted by means of any available free programme, such as Skype, Google Hangouts, Whatsapp, Messenger…

Because we teach our language lessons in a conversational way, without much emphasis on writing, the videoconferencing formula allows us to conduct our lessons practically in the same way and with the same efficiency as in face-to-face lessons.

NOT JUST SKYPE

For example, Skype offers group video calls for up to 50 people and is available free of charge on any phone, tablet or computer https://www.skype.com/pl/features/group-video-chat/.

Skype has the option of sharing the screen with other users so we can present a variety of content (e.g. videos, grammar tasks, PowerPoint slides, etc.) to our students. We can also send files that students will need during the lesson https://www.skype.com/en/features/screen-sharing.

Many programs have quite similar functionalities, such as Google Hangouts and Google Meet, Messenger, Whatsapp etc.

TEACHER’S ENVIRONMENT

The teacher should prepare the appropriate working conditions for himself or herself, i.e. first of all, they need to make sure that the Internet connection and the device are working perfectly.

Secondly, especially if you are teaching a lesson from home, remember to take care of your appearance – at least from the waist upwards 😉

Moreover, you should think about the background on which the students will see you – it must be tidy, without anything that could distract students unnecessarily. There should be no noise in your surroundings. Position yourself more or less facing or sideways to the source of light (your window or lamp). Otherwise, if the light comes from behind you, the students will not see you well on their screens.

WARM-UP

At the beginning of the online lesson we can ask each participant a simple question in the foreign language that we are teaching. This will serve as a “warm-up”, but will also help to check in an orderly way whether everyone has a good connection and whether everyone can be heard (and seen) well. What is more, this kind of warm-up will allow students who are participating in such classes for the first time to get used to the online lesson.

BODY LANGUAGE

We need to remember that although theoretically our listeners can see us on the computer screen, they are much less able to perceive our body language. During face-to-face communication – this applies not only to lessons – we convey a surprisingly great deal of information and suggestions by means of our gestures, behaviour, facial expressions, eyes… During an online lesson we have to convey some of this information through clear verbal communication.

If you share some content on the screen, e.g. exercises, slides or videos, remember to disable screen sharing after the necessary time of presentation. Lessons are more effective when students see their teacher’s face. They are more involved in the class with a sense of visual contact with the teacher, which helps understand and remember the material better.

DIRECT METHOD

The direct method is very easy to use in online lessons – we teach according to the same scheme as “live”, i.e. we first repeat the past few classes and go on to introduce new material.

The greatest part of the lesson is devoted to introducing new words and asking questions, which can be done very easily in an online lesson. We first establish the rule that our students only speak when we ask them to. After asking a question, the teacher immediately says the name of the student who is to answer the question. In this way, you can conduct online lessons with even 10 participants without any misunderstandings.

To reduce confusion when reading in a larger group, you can consider giving up the traditional way, where the first student reads the question, the second reads the answer and the next question, and so on. This should work well in an online lesson with 1-3 participants. In a larger group you can try another option: ask the first student to read a set of up to 2-3 questions and answers, then the next one to read another 2-3 questions and answers, and so on.

GRAMMAR

Since grammar lessons require writing down answers, we must always make sure that student’s own answers are correct in terms of both content and spelling.

The teacher should be able to see what students are writing in order to correct their answers if necessary. During online lessons students can complete the exercises e.g. in a word processor or notepad instead of their book and simply share their screen with the teacher so he or she can check them.

They can also send text messages to the teacher within the programme that is used to conduct the online class. Then the teacher copies and corrects these answers if necessary and sends the correct version back to the student.

If you are teaching a grammar lesson in a larger group, the above methods could become a little impractical. Then it would be better for the teacher to share their the screen. The teacher asks students to do the exercises. Afterwards, each student reads their answer and the teacher types these answers on his device. The students can see them on the shared screen and correct their answers if necessary.

ONLINE CLASSES

In connection with the current epidemic situation, we would like to remind you that the direct method can be used in online lessons in a very effective manner.

Such classes can be conducted by means of any of the available free programmes, such as Skype, Google Hangouts, Whatsapp, Messenger…

We are all aware that the coming weeks (perhaps even months) will be difficult not only for the language teaching industry. However, we are convinced that we should continue to conduct our business in the form that is currently available, at the same time respecting official recommendations, of course.

As we conduct our classes in a conversational way, without the emphasis on writing, the videoconferencing formula allows us to teach our classes practically in the same way and with the same efficiency as during the lessons during which we meet in person.

And if we want to do a written exercise, our student can send us text messages in the same program with their solutions.
